Collection Policy

The library's mission for collection development is to serve the community as a center for reliable information, to provide  encouragement for children, teens and adults to educate themselves continuously and to create opportunities for personal enrichment and recreation. We hope to provide a place where inquiring minds may encounter the rich diversity of ideas in a non-judgmental environment. To that end, we maintain collections of resources in the following areas and formats.
 
Kids Collection
Materials for children through 6th grade, include:
  • Fiction and Non-Fiction books in both print and audio formats
  • Magazines
  • Videorecordings
  • Audio

Teens Collection
Materials for teens from 6th - 12th grade, include:

  • Fiction and Non-Fiction books in both print and audio formats
  • Magazines
  • Audio

General Collection
Materials for all ages, include:

 

  • Fiction and Non-Fiction books in both print and audio formats
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers

Audio-Visual Collection
Materials for all ages, include:
  • Music on CD
  • Feature and foreign films on DVD and VHS
  • Books on tape and CD
  • Art prints
DVD New Releases
Patrons looking for the newest DVD releases may find them on the shelf in our Express Collection. Express DVD's may only be checked out for one week, are loaned out on a walk in first come - first served basis, and can not be placed on hold.
 
Listening Stations
Several listening stations are provided for patron use at the library.  Headphones may be borrowed at the Audiovisual Services desk.
 
eBooks, eAudiobooks and Downloadable Video Collection
Herrick patrons can borrow eBooks, eAudiobooks and downloadable videos by visiting the web sites of our digital book vendors. See the sections below for a description of each collection, system requirements, etc.

Overdrive Digital Catalog
Adobe or Mobipocket eBooks, and Overdrive eAudiobooks items; fiction and non-fiction titles for all age groups. These ebooks and eAudiobooks can be checked out with a valid library card, and then downloaded to a PC or PDA.

There are approximately 500 titles included in our current Overdrive downloadable video collection. Look here for documentaries, classic films and concerts including 25 Years of Improv Comedy, Football Factory, KISS Rock and King Lear.

NetLibrary eBooks & eAudiobooks
Please Note: Patrons must register for a NetLibrary account at a Michigan library to activate this service. Patrons who will be registering at Herrick can stop by the Reference Services desk for registration instructions.

eBooks
3,000+ fiction and non-fiction titles, including the classics, speeches, and government reports. NetLibrary ebooks do not require any special software - they are read online, in a browser window.

Recorded Books (eAudioBooks)
This new collection includes approximately 1,200 titles, fiction and non-fiction titles, including Language Programs, fiction and non-fiction books for all ages. See their Help page for assistance.
