As Daniel Tiger so wisely says "I think it's very, very, very hard to wait especially when you're waiting for something very nice!" We've been patient. It started to feel like we were never going to be able to do storytime again. And then things started looking better and we were so hopeful! And then things started looking not so great. But you know what? We don't want to wait any longer.
We've consulted with some of our fellow area libraries and have been keeping our eye on recommendations from the health department and the CDC and have decided the best course of action is to start storytimes outside for now.
But where? Fear not: we're working with the City of Holland to secure the gazebo at Centennial Park and the bandshell at Kollen Park giving us two fun outdoor locations to bring you enriching early literacy experiences through stories, rhymes, songs, and activities.
We're also combining all ages which means no matter the age of your young child, storytime will be scaffolded to be developmentally appropriate for them and the suggestions we provide will give you new ways to engage your child with early literacy beyond the storytime experience.
And making it even better: we're offering 6 opportunities for you to attend between the Main library and the North branch! On Tuesdays we will hopefully be at the Centennial Park Gazebo, on Wednesdays the North branch will be on their lawn in space designed specifically for this kind of program, and on Thursdays we will hopefully be at the Kollen Park bandshell. Every one of these days we'll offer storytimes from 9:30am-10am and 10:30am-11am. Please check Facebook and Instagram for updated weather related changes or more permanent changes.
Not ready to join us in person? We're still offering our virtual storytime content weekly! These videos are interactive and will be for infants-4 year olds. We'll also have separate videos for sharing books. Sign up to receive a weekly email each time a new storytime is released or subscribe to our YouTube page for new content.
If there's one thing we've learned these past 18 months, it's that change is the only constant. We know this has been hard and will continue to be a challenge, but we are thrilled to welcome our community back to the Herrick District Library storytime experience. We can't wait to see you!
