HDL has plenty of events to help you learn something new this March with speakers on a variety of topics. 

AN EVENING WITH MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT JIM MCCLOUGHAN
HDL is honored to welcome local Congressional Medal of Honor recipient James McCloughan, who will speak about the Medal of Honor, what it represents, and how we can apply those values in our civilian lives. This event commemorates National Medal of Honor Day and National Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

MENTAL ILLNESS & THE COURAGE TO END STIGMA
One in four people will have a serious mental illness in their life and one in six people in Ottawa County report experiencing poor mental health. HDL welcomes Barbara Lee VanHorssen of the Momentum Center to discuss mental illness and what steps can be taken to end its stigma.

HDL will welcome Peter Burkey from the Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association to give a presentation about what celestial bodies will be visible in the spring sky.

the basic properties of electric circuits.
Apr. 25 | Circuits & Symbols: Meet the battery! Learn about circuit diagrams, and the interconnected electronic components that make a circuit function. See how components assembled in series or in parallel may interact differently.
May 23 | Instruments & Measurements: Become acquainted with the instruments used to measure electricity: voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, multimeters, and the
oscilloscope.

A LITERARY CONVERSATION WITHANNE-MARIE OOMAN & JACK RIDL
Award-winning author Anne-Marie Ooman and nationally acclaimed and locally beloved poet Jack Ridl will discuss Ooman’s latest book, As Long As I Know You: The Mom Book. This poetic and heart-rending memoir shares the near-universal challenges and triumphs that come with caring for a parent at the end of life through the lens of Ooman’s own relationship with her mother. Q&A and book signing to follow. Presented by and in collaboration with Hope College’s Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series and Cultural Affairs Committee.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM STORIED OBJECTS: FOLK ART
Winde Gehringer, exhibits coordinator, and Michelle Stempien, education and community programs manager, from the Holland Museum will discuss the stories and creativity behind
the art featured in “Storied Objects: Folk Art from the Holland Museum Collection”. The museum exhibit features a 119-year old quilt and earthenware figurines from Teodora Blanco Nunez, among many other folk art pieces.
