This year’s Middle Read selection, Mexikid by Pedro Martín, is considered a graphic novel memoir. So, what is that, exactly? A graphic novel memoir is an autobiographical account of someone’s life, told through the combination of text and images. These kinds of stories have been growing in popularity, especially with the exponential growth of the publication of graphic novels for kids and teens.
Graphic novel memoirs often make difficult topics more accessible to their audience. There are studies that show that we retain more information through the combination of visuals and text. As Loma Linda University says, “By learning in more than one way, you’re further cementing the knowledge in your mind.” Graphic novel memoirs can be great ways to explore new cultures and topics.
