Find out what's going on with the Big Read this year!

What is the Big Read?

The Big Read Lakeshore is an annual community reading program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Hope College, Herrick, and dozens of schools, libraries, and other organizations across West Michigan team up to celebrate stories by putting on programs, events, and author visits all centered around a single book. This year, we're encouraging our community to explore journeys, resistance, and the transformative power of imagination with I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger.

What about the Little and Middle Reads?

Every year, the Big Read is accompanied by the Little and Middle Reads, so kids can get in on the fun. We select these books to fit with the Big Read's broader themes. 2025's Little Read is Journey, a wordless picture book by Aaron Becker that follows the imaginative adventure of a young girl across fantastical lands and cities.

This year's Middle Read, A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat, is a middle-grade fantasy novel that takes place in a magical, Thai-inspired world.

And the Mini Read?

The Mini Read, chosen for our littlest readers, may be a familiar title: Row, Row, Row Your Boat! This board book pairs the classic children's song (in English and Spanish) with bold and colorful illustrations by Annie Kubler and Sarah Dellow.

When can I see the Big Read author in person?

Leif Enger will be visiting the Herrick Library's Main Branch on Wednesday, November 12 for a free author talk/book signing event. Don't miss it!
