Hello all, and welcome to another edition of What I'm Listening To! This month, to go along with the Big Read book "The Great Gatsby", the theme is popular songs people like to sing while imbibing. Here are some of my favorites!
"Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynard Skynyrd (Sweet Home Alabama)
This one is near and dear to my heart. When I was in college, my fraternity had a special affinity for this song at our gatherings. At some point during Homecoming or even house parties, this song would come on. When it came on, it was like a siren's call, bringing all of us together to belt it out. This is classic rock at its' finest.
"Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett (Jimmy Buffett Live in Las Vegas NV)
I mean, this one kind've speaks for itself. Even now I can hear the tropical theme in my head. Although I've never been to one of Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville hotel/bars, I have been told it is exactly what you pay for. This is a song for people who love sunshine, a body of water to swim in, and a cold margarita next to them. A song that talks about having so much fun you don't remember anything of what happened.

"Wagon Wheel" - Old Crow Medicine Show (Best of Old Crow Medicine Show)
Many of you know I'm not big into country songs, but this one is pretty good. My country music inclined friends will play this while we're out at a bonfire or camping. I associate this song with cheap beer and whiskey. Maybe a wine cooler. Prove me wrong.

"Friends in Low Places" - Garth Brooks (Double Live)
Small disclosure: when I was in 2nd grade, I got into a one year country phase. Whose tape cassette did I get? None other than Garth Brooks. This song is probably one of the most popular country songs people will sing at karaoke. Usually at least 2-3 people on stage, and one of them is off-key. Great song.
"Sweet Caroline" - Neil Diamond (Best of Neil Diamond)
There are two versions of this song. One is the PG version. The other, well, you're going to have to go to a bar or a party that's playing it to know the updated lyrics. The lyrics aren't from Neil, but from excited and joyful partygoers singing along to this hit. There's nothing like yelling at the top of your lungs how good the good times really are.
