Friday Night’s HDL Beach Ball is Where You Want to Be

Mermaids, music, beach-themed fun and summer prizes will take over Herrick District Library on Friday, Aug. 7, during The Grand Finale: Beach Ball, an after-hours celebration marking the end of this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

Assistant Director Natalie Williams is excited about the event. “"This is truly the grand finale of our Summer Reading Challenge," Williams said. “It's a chance to celebrate an incredible summer of reading together. We hope people leave with great memories, their prizes, a new book, and a little extra library magic.”

Live mermaids will greet visitors from various perches throughout the library. Guests can enjoy water-themed games and crafts, live music, popcorn and beach-themed mocktails.

The event will feature two live bands, including Green Acres, whose jangly indie rock sound provides the perfect soundtrack for a summer road trip. The Saugatuck Center for the Arts will bring its mobile art unit (the WiP). Partner organizations from the Summer Challenge will offer games and activities throughout the evening.

Participants are encouraged to dress in formal ballroom attire or their favorite beach-themed outfit, bring friends and family, and enjoy an evening of music, games and celebration.

"This is your first chance to pick up your Summer Reading prizes," Williams said. "We're making it an experience, not just a pickup.” Library users who have completed this year’s summer challenge game board or reading log are invited to turn their forms in at the event for first dibs on summer prizes and free merch. While prize pickup will be available Aug. 8-15, merchandise will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year’s Summer Challenge, centered around the theme of Explore the Shore, is a collaborative effort between HDL, City of Holland Parks and Recreation, Holland Board of Public Works, Ottawa County Parks, and the Outdoor Discovery Center. Participants must read at least five books or complete the Summer Challenge game board to earn a free book of their choice from the prize room.
