Student Becomes Entrepreneur with Help from Library

DIY gifting has always been a favorite in Ezra’s house. When the family learned of Groundworks, Ezra was instantly drawn to the button maker and all the ways it could be used.

When an Entrepreneurship class through his homeschool cooperative required him to come up with a product to sell, the button maker came to mind right away. While anyone can learn to use the button maker inside Groundworks, the library also offers button makers for checkout through the Library of Things. Ezra checked one out and put it to work, creating a collection of magnets to sell at his school’s entrepreneurship event.

The event was a hit. Encouraged by the response, Ezra decided to try a different market: the maker’s market at Scrapyard Climbing Collective. There, he sold out of his creations within the first hour. His mom dashed to the store for more supplies so he could keep making magnets right at his table—and he sold out a second time.

“Mom, I can make these so cheap,” Ezra said. “Because of the library!”

Ezra plans to keep creating magnets and pins using the library’s button maker, with ideas already forming for even more items to offer at future events.
