Arbor Day began as a community coming together to enrich the lands with trees. Nebraska is known for its rich earth and farming, but early settlers had trouble keeping the soil secure from the wind due to the lack of trees. Nebraska was the first state to proclaim Arbor Day in 1874, and now it is celebrated in all fifty states. Read more in this brief history of Arbor Day.
For years Herrick District Library has empowered residents to enrich their neighborhoods with trees through the Arbor Day seedling giveaway. Come to the library, Main or North Branch, on April 29, 2022, from 9-4 PM, and choose a tree seedling from our variety of options. Information on the trees and planting instructions will be available. While you're here, don't forget to enter the drawing to win a flowering tree or shrub.
