Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.
Join us in celebrating by attending the Juneteenth Freedom Festival and Market at Kollen Park on June 18 from 3-7pm. Other ways to celebrate include learning about the history of the day, supporting Black-owned businesses, and advocating for recognition of Juneteenth in your community. In the meantime, check out a book from the lists below to learn more.
