Comics for Younger Readers

Every year at the beginning of May, we celebrate free comic book day! It’s a great day to celebrate all things comics. There has also been a large increase in the publication of comics and graphic novels for kids and younger readers. So, you might be wondering: where’s a good place for my kid to start reading comics? Luckily, there are a lot of great places for them to start!

Before jumping into recommendations, you might be curious about the difference between comics and graphic novels. The main difference is graphic novels typically contain one whole story, while stories in comics are generally told across multiple issues. Thus, comics are usually published in an issue format and then put into volumes, like you see for superhero comics. Graphic novels tend to be longer and contain a beginning, middle, and end.

The list below includes early reader comics, as well as some graphic novels that make a great starting point for kids looking to get into the comics/graphic novel format.
