The first time I went to Ann Arbor to experience a Moth Story Slam, I felt like I had wandered into another realm. I was surrounded by 200 adults, each of them ready to hear the 5-minute true stories of complete strangers. I was captivated by the narratives, some of them funny, some of them tragic, all of them true and meaningful because they had happened in one person's wild and precious life.
Perhaps you've heard these stories on The Moth Radio Hour on NPR. The Moth features true, personal stories told live and without notes, stories which thematically explore universal human experiences and connections. Story Slams are held monthly across the country; Ann Arbor and Detroit are Michigan's official locations. Some cities have held Moth-like offshoot events, gatherings like Passages in Flint held at Queens Provisions, and most recently Story Spark held at Park Theater here in Holland.
In October, Herrick District Library has invited David Scott Smith, one of Michigan's very best storytellers, to teach us how to share our lives with one another in meaningful ways. David tells stories primarily in Ann Arbor, winning the Story Slams regularly. He has also told stories at the Grand Slam, an annual event in Ann Arbor, winning that event as well. His life is rich with incredible experiences, but he's also able to capture the profound beauty of everyday moments. It is a joy and an honor that he's coming here.
Please consider coming to one or both of these events. On Tuesday, October 7 from 6-8 pm, you can attend a workshop to learn to tell your story at the library. And a week later, on Tuesday, October 14 from 6-8 at Bowerman's on 8th, you can put your name in a hat in hopes of being one of 10 people who will get to tell it. The theme that night will be Holding On. Both require registration, so please follow the links.
In addition to the workshop, the library has resources to help you prepare. Check these out:
