March means it's Quilt Month, opens a new window here at HDL and we are ready to celebrate!
All through the month of March, stop in at either Main or North Branch to see quilts on display throughout the library. Pick up a Quilt Hop punch card, visit other participating libraries, and submit a completed card at your home library to enter a quilt-themed raffle. Planning a quilt-inspired road trip? HDL’s Quilt Hop big event! Members from the Big Red Quilters’ Guild will be exhibiting their work and demonstrating specialized techniques to the public in this open house style evening. Drop by to learn new skills and view a wide array of quilt styles. This program is a great opportunity to ask your quilting-related questions and get inspired!
Beginners’ Quilting Craft - “Rail Fence”, opens a new window
Date: Monday March 13, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Location: Main Floor Meeting Room
Learn to make a beginners’ level “Rail Fence” quilting project with members of Holland’s Big Red Quilters’ Guild. Patrons are welcome to bring their own sewing machines to use. Highlights from Storied Objects: Folk Art from the Holland Museum Collection, opens a new window
Date: March 20, 6:30pm-7:30pm
Location: Auditorium
Winde Gehringer, Exhibits Coordinator and Michelle Stempien, Education and Community Programs Manager from the Holland Museum will discuss the stories and creativity behind the art featured in Storied Objects: Folk Art from the Holland Museum Collection. The exhibit features a 119-year old quilt, earthenware figurines from Teodora Blanco Nunez, and a bee skep, made to look like Saint Ambrose, the Patron Saint of Beekeeping among many other folk art pieces.
Quilting 101 - Handwork Techniques, opens a new window
Date: Saturday, March 25, 9:30am-12:00pm
Location: Main Floor Meeting Room
Kelly Kindt, owner of Pressing Matters Quilt Shoppe, will teach a beginning hand piecing/quilting workshop. She will demonstrate hand piecing, paper piecing, and highlight tools and tricks. Participants will be able to hand piece a four-patch quilt block as well as learn the basics for English paper piecing. Supplies will be provided for use during the class.
