While plenty of novels dive into the eerie world of cryptids, aliens, and other unexplained phenomena, there’s something about seeing these stories come to life on screen that truly makes them shine. This summer at Herrick District Library, we’re embracing the weird, the mysterious, and the downright otherworldly with our Reel Encounters movie series.
I’ll be honest—cryptids were never really my thing. But growing up in the '90s with an older sibling meant spending more nights than I can count watching The X-files through the cracks in my fingers. More recently, I watched The Shape of Water mostly out of my love for all things strange (and because Guillermo del Toro never misses). I didn’t expect to get so drawn in—but there’s something magnetic about stories that make us question what’s real.
So whether you’re a lifelong believer or just love a good creature feature, come explore the unknown with us. Who knows? You might just find the truth.
Bonus: Snacks will be available at the showings—because every great movie deserves great snacks.
And feel free to bring a friend or the whole family—these screenings are better when shared.
