Each quarter, we offer a kit packed with tips and suggestions around an early literacy calendar (also available in Spanish). Here’s a guide inspired by our Summer Early Lit Kit that will help you read, play, talk, sing, and write at home with your little ones:
Read: Read a book about summer (here are a few to get you started) and talk about all the fun activities you can do in the summertime. Are there any activities in the book that inspire you? Make a list of summer activities you want to make sure to do in the next few months!
Sing: One of the great things to do around summer in this part of the world is going to the beach! Sing this fun song to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”!
The waves on the beach go up and down
Up and down, up and down
The waves on the beach go up and down
All day long
Can you make up any other verses? Think about the animals at the beach, the activities people do, and the snacks you might eat there, and see if you can work any of them into your song!
Talk: Talk to your child about some of the things you used to do in the summer when you were a child. What about your favorite activities to do with your child now, as a parent? What are your child’s favorite activities to do in the summertime? Talk about how your favorite activities are the same or different.
Play: Go to a park and play outside! Experiment with leaves, seeds, and grass, and notice how they fall when you drop them. Can you find a helicopter seed and drop that one? Notice what it does! If you drop a leaf and a piece of grass at the same time, do they fall at the same time? Does it make a difference if you toss them in different directions?
Write: Use a piece of chalk or a soft stone to draw a picture on the sidewalk! Try to draw a few different shapes—can you do both a square and a circle? How about a triangle? Draw some swirls to connect the shapes together! Then draw whatever you like!
Celebrate the warmer weather and learn more about the season by digging into some of these fun picture books! HerrickDL KidPicks
