What I’m Listening To – Football is Back!

Hello all, and welcome back for another edition of What I'm Listening to! For this month's edition, we're going to throw the pigskin around and leave all out on the football field. My favorite sports season is upon us once again, so I chose songs that people would hear when they're at a stadium, cheering their team on!

"Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes (Elephant)

This song gets played at every stadium at least once a game. For example, the University of Michigan's student section goes nuts and starts jumping up and down chanting it. It's such a catchy tune, and as soon as that bass starts strumming, you know exactly what track is about to play. While the band broke up some years ago, this is unequivocally their most famous song.

"Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor (Rocky III: Music From the Motion Picture)

Survivor may have written more songs, but no song is more famous of theirs than this one. Visually, there is the iconic scene of Sylvester Stallone jogging through Philadelphia up the steps to this soundtrack. Musically, this is another instant "I know what this song is" as soon as the trumpet starts. The whole concept of someone trying to train themselves to fight as an underdog endeared people not only to the movie, but to this track.

"Jump Around" - House of Pain (Rhino Hi-Five: House of Pain)

This is a head bobber for sure! Any time I'm watching college football in the summer/fall, there is a good chance at some point I will see the stadium jumping up and down to this iconic 90's classic. House of Pain was one of those one-hit wonders that perpetuated a lot of the 80's/90's, so unfortunately their discography is not a long one. I will however "Jump, Jump!" along to it if I hear it come on the radio.

"Lose Yourself" - Eminem (8 Mile)

This song goes SO hard! This has to be one of my favorite Eminem songs of all time. The great thing about this track is how it has transcended the rap scene and engrained itself into professional sports. The song is about how "you only got one shot, do not miss this chance to blow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime." As such, this song can be heard at many sporting events, usually at a critical time in the game. I can't stress how much I love this song!

"Enter Sandman" - Metallica (Metallica)

There seems to be a theme with most of the songs I've chosen at this point. Besides them all being used in stadiums during sporting events, they all can be easily recognized when they first start playing the initial tune. Thus is the case for our last song on our stadium tour, Enter Sandman. This heavy rock classic is a favorite, and my favorite song of Metallica (sorry Master of Puppets). When the electrical guitar starts to play it's initial chord, the crowd just starts going wild. This is such a hype up/lead up song, used like when a team is about to either kick off or come out of the tunnel to play.
