What I’m Listening To – January 2024

Hello all, and welcome to another edition of What I'm Listening To! This month, I thought we should take a deep dive into an artist I don't actually listen to. I don't have her albums, I don't have any of her music downloaded. However, I would on chance occasions hear a song on the radio sometimes, not knowing it was her. Lately, she has been in the news for dating a football player on the Kansas City Chiefs. In honor of the Time Person of the Year, and in honor of my friend Russ who is a full fledged "Swiftie", it's time to list the top 5 Taylor Swift songs I (kind of) know!

"Bad Blood" - Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar (1989 - Taylor's Version)

This is probably my favorite song of Taylor's, and my most known of hers to me as well. As you all know, I enjoy my rap music, so to have Kendrick Lamar on this track was a gift. The beat and tonal difference between Taylor and Kendrick makes this song so enjoyable when each of their parts comes up. Kendrick is a great lyricist, but Taylor is equally as talented. Great song.

"Shake it Off" - Taylor Swift (1989 - Taylor's Version)

In terms of catchy Taylor Swift songs, I don't know how this one isn't at the top of your list. Even while writing this, the chorus is stuck in my head. I think this song gives good advice however. When life seems to come at you with negativity or situations, you really need to just shake, shake, shake it off.

"Blank Space" - Taylor Swift (1989 - Taylor's Version)

This is definitely one of those songs I have heard on the radio and both A) did not realize it was Taylor Swift B) Did not know the name to the song. The good news is I enjoyed it. This is one of those classic self-reflective songs where Taylor is aware of the chaos she can bring into her dating life. Then after it doesn't work, she writes a song like this....

"Anti-hero" - Taylor Swift (Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition) )

....or this one! She literally states "I'm the problem, it's me". Whether this is true will be debated by scholars for centuries after, or at least Taylor Swift's fans. Do I think she's the problem? No, I don't. Do I think her taste in dating might be the problem, maybe. Is all of this subjective to personal interpretation? Yes.

"Look What You Made Me Do" - Taylor Swift (Reputation)

After the first four songs, it got harder to recognize any more Taylor Swift songs for me. That being said, once I heard the chorus to this, I realize I had heard it before. I like the dark tone to this song and music video, and it really is a contrast to how she usually sings. Without looking anything up, I'm assuming this was a particularly bad breakup to elicit this kind of song. Enjoy!
