Explore HDL’s New Online Resource Offerings

Why are some of the digital resources transitioning?
Because of the instability of federal funding for library services (which could impact the funding for databases provided for us by the Library of Michigan), Herrick District Library reviewed the databases we are subscribing to, the usage of each database, and the possible needs in our community should Herrick have to provide additional databases for the community in the 2026 fiscal year. We found that we simply needed to find more economical options to meet the needs of our patrons.

Which resources have left, and with what have they been replaced?

  • Mango Languages was replaced with Transparent Language. This is a similar language learning platform. Many other libraries use Transparent Language, including the Brooklyn Public Library and the Los Angeles Public Library, and the cost for the app is significantly less.
  • The Morningstar online database will be replaced with Weiss Financial Ratings Series database. The Main Library will now be getting the printed Morningstar newsletters so that patrons can access this information by visiting the library. Weiss Financial Ratings has a well-reviewed online database accessible from home. It has the option of some personalization (Morningstar does not), and rates stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and Medigap insurance options.
  • Creative Bug is no longer available in the same manner it was previously via our website, in part because the Creative Bug courses are available for checkout on Hoopla. Creative Bug can now be accessed through a Hoopla Binge Pass where you'll find the exact same content you know and love.
  • Our Linked In Learning database has been discontinued due to lack of usage, and it will not be replaced with a new product. We highly encourage patrons to stop in at our Ground Works maker space to learn new skills.

What new resources are now available?
Brain Fuse: Brain Fuse has 3 online assistance programs for students and job seekers to which we will be subscribing. These programs are Help Now (homework help), Job Now (job seeking help), and College Now (add the language from the brochure)

Which resources will continue on as usual?
