Fall Early Literacy Kit

Each quarter, we offer a kit packed with tips and suggestions around an early literacy calendar (also available in Spanish).  Here’s a guide inspired by our Fall Early Lit Kit that will help you read, play, talk, sing, and write at home with your little ones:

Read: Read a book about cars (we’ve included a list to get you started!) and talk about what you notice. What kinds of cars are in the book you chose? What colors are they? How are they similar or different from the cars you see or use in your life? Do you have any toy cars? How are they similar or different from the cars in your book? How are they similar or different from the cars in your own life?

Sing: Here’s a fun song to try about a dump truck! It’s sung to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot.”

I’m a little dump truck

Full of rocks

Here is my engine

Here is my box

When the crew is ready

Hear me shout,

“Pull the levers and dump me out!”

Can you make up any more versions with different kinds of vehicles? How about “I’m a Little Race Car” or “I’m a Little Go Cart?”

Talk: Talk to your child about how cars have changed since you were younger. What car did your family have when you were younger? What was your first car? What was different or unusual about them compared to cars that are common now? Have you ever take a bus ride or a train ride with your child? Talk to them about how riding a bus or a train is different from riding in a car. Plan a bus ride to go somewhere in town and talk about what you both experienced!

Play: Have you ever made a car out of a cardboard box? Ask a grown-up for a cardboard box and see if you can make one! If you happen to have a big enough box, you can even make a car that you can sit in! Don’t forget to make car noises!

Write: Imagine you’re going on a trip in your car. What will you need to take with you? Make a packing list by drawing pictures of all the things you’ll need to take. Ask a grown-up to help you gather up some of these things for your pretend trip!
