HDL Staff Picks: Parenting Books

When I sit on the children’s desk, I get to hear a lot of great conversations. Most of them are long the lines of:

                Kid 1: That’s not an animal! It’s a stegosaurus!

                Kid 2: Stegasauruses are animals!

Kid 1: No. They’re dinosaurs. You can tell because animals still exist but dinosaurs don’t.

But I also get to hear a lot of the parents’ conversations with each other—about how their kids are eating and sleeping, comparing their development with the development of other kids the same age, and sometimes discussing those difficult behaviors that are all too common to parenting. I also get a lot of parents asking for recommendations for good parenting books—sometimes asking each other and sometimes asking me.

The trouble is, there are SO MANY parenting books out there! It’s hard to know where to start if you’ve never read any before. And also I only have one kid, and while I do read some parenting books I mostly read other things, and so the number of parenting books I can recommend from personal experience are limited. Luckily, I work in a building full of people who also read a lot of books, and some of those are also parenting books! If you’re one

of these parents, looking for some helpful parenting tips but without the time or energy to grab a book that you aren’t reasonably sure will be a decent one, this list was made for you!

And as always, if what you’re looking for isn’t represented here, feel free to ask a friendly librarian near you!
