I was a young kid when I knew how 007 introduced himself and what kind of drink he ordered. The martini, "shaken not stirred," is synonymous with James Bond. Bond purists might argue his signature drink is the "Vesper," but I haven't read the books, and there were a lot of movies before Daniel Craig detailed the recipe in Casino Royale. Movies and film repeatedly use signature drink to construct characters. These are shortcuts that tell us about a character or timeframe. The Dude from The Big Lebowski is cool, and he...abides, therefore, he drinks White Russians. The men in Mad Men are serious businessmen, and it was the 60's so they drank Old Fashioned cocktails. In the movie Top Gun, there's Iceman, "that's the way he flies, ice cold, no mistakes. He wears you down, you get bored, frustrated, you do something stupid, and he's got you." He drinks, you guessed it, ice water.
