November Early Literacy

Each month, we offer a kit packed with tips and suggestions around our early literacy calendar.  Here’s a guide inspired by our November Early Lit kit that will help you read, play, talk, sing, and write at home with your little ones:

Read: Dressing Up! / Me Disfrazo! is a great book to read and re-read.  Notice the details in the illustrations on your first read.  It’s okay if you don’t read all the words right away.  Enjoy the pictures!  During the next read, allow some time to let your child predict an answer for questions throughout the story before you turn the page.

Dressing Up!

Play:  Play pretend with items you can find around your home.  Do you have a blanket you can make into a cape?  What could you do with a cardboard box?  How about an empty paper towel roll?  What else could you use to dress up?

Talk:  Talk about items you can find on the pages of the book, Dressing Up! / Me Disfrazo!, that you might find to play with at home: An empty cardboard box, blankets, necklaces, bracelets, etc.

Sing:  Pretend you’re an astronaut going to the moon just like the kids in the story by singing "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom."  Don’t forget to jump up in the air for blast off!

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We’re going to the moon.

If you want to take a trip
Climb aboard my rocketship

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon
In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Blast off!

Write:  Prepare little fingers to control pencils and crayons by using those muscles to do things like thread pasta or large beads onto string.  Make a bracelet or necklace together.
